The IMM 1344 form is a Sponsorship Agreement which allows you to help sponsor your relatives or close family members to immigrate to Canada.
This form enables Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their spouses. At a later stage the sponsored person can apply for immigration to Canada based on family class sponsorship programs.
Sponsors must be either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident living in Canada.
This post will walk you through all the necessary information you need as a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in order to sponsor a relative or close family member to move to Canada
In order to complete the IMM 1344 pdf application package the following will be applicable:
- Download the latest application form (2019). Fill out the form and save it on your PC.
- Validate the document you have filled out in order to complete the application.
- Print, date and sign the document. By clicking the “validate” button it will automatically create barcodes and a signature line on the last page.
- Check the document checklist to ensure no form is unfilled.

Citizens and permanent residents over 18 are supported by the Canadian government to sponsor their family members as well as certain relatives for immigrating to Canada.
To become a sponsor to your relatives you will need to provide supporting documents that confirm that you and the sponsored party have a valid relationship. In some cases you may be required to submit additional forms too.
Who is a co-signer?
A co-signer is only needed if you are sponsoring your parent, grandparents or other relatives and you as a sponsor do not actually have the required financial funds. In this case if your spouse has the financial required income they can become the co-signer and financially take care of your relatives.
Do you need a cosigner if you are sponsoring your spouse?
In this case you do not need a cosigner if you are only sponsoring your spouse.
Who is the principal applicant?
This is the name of your spouse who you are sponsoring as well as all their details (where they live, date of birth etc.).
What does Conjugal mean?
If you cannot live with your sponsor as a couple due to reasons beyond your control. Reasons such as immigration barrier, religious reasons or sexual orientation.
Can you sponsor somebody if you yourself are not living in Canada?
If you are a Canadian citizen living outside of Canada you can do the sponsorship from abroad if you can prove you will be returning to Canada in the near future. If you are a permanent resident you can only do this application if you are in Canada (it is ok if you spouse is not in Canada).
How can I check the progress and status updates of the application?
This will be sent to you via email so be sure to enter the correct email address on your application.
Can I be sponsor if I receive social benefits?
If you receive social benefits you are not able to sponsor your spouse. Do not apply for social benefits until your application is submitted otherwise you may be disqualified. In case you absolutely need social security benefits then make sure to pay all the money back before submitting the sponsorship application.
